Welcome to our October newsletter, a source for the latest at Birch Bark Editing. Our heart goes out to all those in the path of the hurricane.

Linda Dittmar’s memoir Tracing Homelands has been accepted for publication by Interlink and will hit the stands in June/July of 2023.

Black Lawrence Press awarded  The Hudson Prize to Highwire Act & Other Tales of Survival by JoeAnn Hart. Look for it in 2023!

Gail Hosking read her essay  “OneSmall Step” (West Trade Review). Other work by Gail that’s been recently published includes "Kibbutz Machanaim, 1972" ( Main Street Rag) and "The Zen of My Refrigerator" (Healing Muse).

Erika Nichols-Frazer’s essay “Trying to Save the Honeybees” appeared in Gone Lawn.


Mix & Meet jumped into the fall season in early September with prompts and prose. It’s a fabulous group — join us on October 4th!

We hosted poets Judith Baumel with Rachel Hadas for our September InConversation event—they read stunning poetry about family, history, and the pandemic, and followed the readings with a discussion of poetic form and the influence of mentors. If you missed it, you can watch the event here

Moments in Miniature, a three-hour class on writing flash prose, was a fast and fabulous success! Stay tuned for more Birch Bark offerings.

Bring your voice to the fore! You’ll leave this workshop with 2-3 pieces that tap into the distinctive power of the flash form, work you’ll submit to literary magazines dedicated to concerns that circle us daily.
